Safety at work is an extremely topical issue given the high number of accidents occurring every year. The development of new ICT technologies, still underexplored in the domain, has an enormous capacity to significantly reduce the risks in potentially dangerous activities.
SAFER (SAFEty on Road construction activities) addresses the above context with the aim to provide an innovative technological solution to improve the safety of workers in the construction sector, with a particular focus on temporary construction sites on roads and highways.

Thanks to Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision, the system is able to analyze a specific work area and to identify potential dangers for workers.

The solution can monitor a number of critical situations for the workers, such as:

• being in dangerous positions
• not wearing helmets or other personal protection equipments
• moving outside their working area
• lying on the ground (Man-Down)
• unattended tools left on operation area.

The system processes images from fiexd and mobile cameras and converts them into useful information to workers, to ensure safety standards and reduce the risk of accidents.

The constructions sector is a complex environment that presents a great variability of risks. The identified use cases therefore represent an initial field of verification to understand how the new enabling technologies can be leveraged to go along with construction companies in their transformation path towards the digitization of the work scenario. The workers will be those who will benefit most from the results of SAFER project. In addition, the site safety managers will benefit of a tool able to increase their knowledge on the operational scenario and will take advantage of a digital dashboard mapping the current status of workers safety with synthetic views of the historical data collected by the system.
